Handmaid’s Tale Finale Nears as Swift Rumours Swirl Online

Moss calls the viral cameo theory “hilarious” while confirming that Swift personally approved the use of her unreleased Reputation track in Season 6.

A flash of red-cloaked intrigue set social media alight this week after viewers claimed they had spotted Taylor Swift slipping into The Handmaid’s Tale as an uncredited Mayday driver, a theory fuelled by the surprise debut of “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)” in the penultimate episode of the Hulu drama’s final season. Lead actor-producer Elisabeth Moss greeted the speculation with amusement, telling TVLine that the hooded extra in question is “of course not Taylor,” though she declared the idea “hilarious” and added that she “loves” the notion of a cameo.

The rumour’s momentum illustrates how deliberately the series deployed Swift’s music. Moss said she had wanted a Swift track “for many years” and waited until co-editing Episode 9, titled “Execution,” to secure the rights, calling the pairing of lyric and uprising “the perfect moment.” Editor Wendy Hallam Martin recounted trying “many songs” before Swift’s revenge anthem landed “magically” on every edit point, prompting an enthusiastic green-light from the singer’s team. The producer-star’s devotion dates back to Season 4, when the cast bonded over Swift’s Reputation tour, a detail Moss shared while noting that several co-stars are “all Swifties.”

Fan excitement escalated when the show’s official X account posted — and swiftly deleted — the clip featuring the song; Universal Music Group mirrored the post before erasing it as well, stoking rumours that Swift is timing a Reputation (Taylor’s Version) announcement to next week’s American Music Awards. Swift’s camp has not commented, but chart watchers note the track’s placement follows earlier teasers in Amazon’s Wilderness and Apple’s The Dynasty, adding corporate intrigue to the Easter-egg chase.

Behind the screen, The Handmaid’s Tale wrapped its Toronto shoot in February after strike-induced delays, with the 10-episode sixth season billed as the series’ last. Co-showrunners Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang told Entertainment Weekly that Moss, who directed the episode, inserted the Swift track without warning, and that Swift “embraced the idea,” calling the clearance a coup for a finale designed to feel “honest and organic.” The series finale airs 27 May, when viewers will learn whether the pop star remains outside Gilead’s walls — or surprises fans once more.
