Nikki, the tormented lead of this summer’s horror sensation “Obsession,” is joining the roster of roaming characters at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights, creative director John Murdy announced Sunday during a panel at the Midsummer Scream convention in Los Angeles.
Rather than anchoring a dedicated haunted house, Nikki will appear as a scareactor wandering the streets of Universal Studios Hollywood, with Murdy encouraging guests to approach the hunt with a searching mindset. “Nikki is out there somewhere, you need to get into a Where’s Waldo?-type mentality,” he told the crowd. “She might be looking for her next obsession, and I’ll leave it at that.”
Murdy said the character was added to this year’s lineup unusually late, after “Obsession” became one of the summer’s biggest box office surprises, grossing more than $475 million worldwide against a small production budget. Halloween Horror Nights typically finalizes its scare lineup roughly a year ahead of the event, leaving the team to scramble once the film’s popularity became clear by May. It remains unclear whether Nikki will also appear at Universal Orlando’s edition of the event, though some outlets have reported she is planned for both parks.
In the film, written and directed by Curry Barker, Nikki’s co-worker Bear uses a supernatural artifact called the One Wish Willow to force her to fall obsessively in love with him, stripping her of any real choice in the matter and triggering the story’s escalating violence. That detail has shaped how Universal is framing the character at the event: promotional materials describe her as “the latest victim of the One Wish Willow’s terrifying curse” rather than a villain in her own right.
The framing hasn’t fully settled online. Some fans have raised concerns that turning a character whose defining trait is a curse imposed on her without consent into a Halloween scare figure sidesteps the film’s point about her lost autonomy, while others have leaned into dark humor about her single-minded devotion, joking on social media about her work ethic and refusal to take breaks. Inde Navarrette, who plays Nikki in the film, is expected to be reflected in the roaming character’s design, based on her bloodied appearance from the film’s climax. Halloween Horror Nights runs from late August through November 1.
