‘Ludwig’ Named Most-Watched UK Scripted Show of 2026

The BBC comedy-drama beat streaming and broadcast rivals with a 9.1 million audience, and a Christmas special with David Suchet is on the way.

The BBC’s detective comedy-drama Ludwig has become the most-watched UK scripted show of 2026, drawing a 9.1 million audience for the opening episode of its second series, according to Barb data reported by overnights.tv.

The BBC announced the milestone Monday. The figure puts the David Mitchell vehicle ahead of every drama on the country’s broadcasters and streamers this year, including Prime Video’s The Night Manager series two at 8.7 million and the BBC’s own Small Prophets at 7.6 million.

Series two began August 20 and wrapped last Thursday, when the finale pulled 1.6 million overnight viewers. The gap between that figure and the 9.1 million tally shows how much of the audience arrives after broadcast, through iPlayer and catch-up.

Mitchell plays John Taylor, a reclusive puzzle setter who impersonates his missing twin brother, a detective, and infiltrates the local police station to find him. Along the way he gets drawn into a run of murder investigations. Anna Maxwell Martin and Izuka Hoyle co-star. Mark Brotherhood created and writes the show, and Big Talk produces.

Kenton Allen, Big Talk’s chief, called Taylor a “gloriously eccentric detective” and said the show has ignored the usual conventions. He credited Brotherhood with a clever, funny and warm series that viewers have folded into their routines.

The BBC has already committed to more. A third series is ordered, and a Christmas special starring David Suchet will air in December. The first series debuted in September 2024 and earned a 97 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes across 33 reviews, which gave the second run a strong base.

The achievement has limits. Ludwig tops scripted television only, and it cannot match the BBC’s reality competition The Traitors, which reached a consolidated audience of 13.3 million earlier this year. Comparisons across shows also depend on measurement windows, since broadcasters and streamers count viewing over different periods before publishing totals.

Still, the result gives the BBC a scripted hit at a time when British dramas fight for attention against streaming giants with far larger budgets. The corporation has leaned on Mitchell’s dry charm and a puzzle-box format that suits family viewing, and both are paying off.
