Amazon MGM Studios’ television chief signaled Thursday that a season 2 renewal for “Every Year After” could be announced soon, crediting the romance drama’s rapid climb to the top of Prime Video’s charts to a “halo effect” from another summer hit, “Off Campus.”
Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, made the comments during an executive panel ahead of this weekend’s Obsessed Fest, Prime Video’s young-adult fan festival. “Every Year After,” based on Carley Fortune’s novel “Every Summer After,” reached the No. 1 spot on Prime Video’s U.S. and global charts within three days of its June 10 premiere, unseating “Off Campus,” the college hockey romance that had topped the service for nearly a month. “Off Campus” reached 36 million viewers in its first 12 days and was Prime Video’s most-watched series debut ever among women 18 to 34, according to figures the company released in May; it was renewed for a second season in February, before it had even premiered.
“One success begets another,” Friedlander said of the connection between the two shows. Asked about a second season of “Every Year After,” he added, “I hope to have news on that soon” — stopping short of confirming a renewal.
“Every Year After” follows Percy Fraser (Sadie Soverall) and Sam Florek (Matt Cornett), childhood friends in the lakeside town of Barry’s Bay whose romance unravels and is rekindled a decade later. The first season ended on a cliffhanger: Sam’s brother, Charlie, suffers a heart attack after spotting a photograph tied to Fortune’s sequel novel, “One Golden Summer,” which is expected to serve as the basis for a second season if one is ordered.
No formal pickup has been announced, and any second season would face a tight runway. Production on the first season ran from June to September 2025, with roughly nine months of post-production before the show reached Prime Video this June, putting a 2027 release in play only if filming begins soon. Showrunner Amy B. Harris has said she envisions the franchise running five seasons, drawing on Fortune’s catalog and built-out supporting cast beyond Percy and Sam’s story.
Fortune, Harris, and stars Cornett and Bradway are scheduled to appear at Obsessed Fest on Saturday in Los Angeles, where Prime Video is expected to showcase its slate of book-to-screen adaptations, including “The Love Hypothesis” and “Elle.” “Off Campus,” meanwhile, has already confirmed its second season will shift focus to a different couple, Dean and Allie, after Hannah and Garrett carried the first.
