Good Omens, the beloved fantasy series penned by Neil Gaiman, is on the cusp of securing a Season 3 renewal from Amazon and the BBC, according to insider sources. In anticipation of this renewal, the principal cast, fronted by Michael Sheen and David Tennant, have had their options extended.
However, it’s been confirmed that Douglas Mackinnon, who served as executive producer, director, and co-showrunner during the show’s first two seasons, will not be returning for Season 3.
Mackinnon made his departure from ‘Good Omens’ public via Instagram. Responding to a SAG-AFTRA strike-related challenge for film and TV professionals to share images from their work, he posted a set photo from the Prime Video and BBC Two series.
While he didn’t explicitly name the show, fans quickly recognized the set and engaged in a discussion about ‘Good Omens’ in the comments. In response to the fan discussion, Mackinnon stated, “I’m not involved with this show anymore.”
This revelation understandably sparked concern among fans about the future of ‘Good Omens.’ However, sources indicate that Season 3 is highly likely to happen.
Season 2, released in August, is believed to have performed well, with Prime Video proudly promoting it as the #1 comedy on the platform globally following its launch.
In the same month, Gaiman hinted at Season 3 when responding to a fan’s question. He noted, “It’s planned and plotted, and if there wasn’t a Writers Strike on, I’d be writing it right now.”
Gaiman, who co-authored the original novel ‘Good Omens’ was based on with Terry Pratchett, has indicated that Season 3 would draw inspiration from the duo’s unfinished sequel to their book. This is expected to bring the story to its conclusion. In response to another fan’s query about the show’s future beyond Season 3, Gaiman stated, “No, there won’t be an S4.”
The second season of ‘Good Omens’ comprising six episodes delves into storylines that extend beyond the source material, further exploring the unique friendship between Aziraphale (Sheen), a meticulous angel and rare book dealer, and Crowley (Tennant), a fast-living demon.
Having been on Earth since the beginning of time, and with the thwarting of the Apocalypse, Aziraphale and Crowley are adjusting to life among mortals in London’s Soho when an unexpected messenger brings an intriguing mystery.
The extensive cast around Sheen and Tennant is headed by Jon Hamm, who portrays Gabriel, the leader of Heaven’s forces.
‘Good Omens’ is a collaborative production of Amazon Studios, BBC Studios Productions, The Blank Corporation, and Narrativia.
