The announcement of Stranger Things season 5 as the Netflix series’ final chapter has left fans eager for answers and closure. With the looming threat of Vecna and the haunting breach between the Upside Down and the real world, the stage is set for a climactic showdown in the upcoming season.

Throughout its run, Stranger Things has showcased a diverse ensemble cast, each member contributing to the show’s appeal. However, the show’s traditional focus on certain characters has led audiences to perceive them as the main protagonists.

Yet, a revelation at the conclusion of Stranger Things season 4 hints at a twist in the tale, suggesting that the true hero may have been hiding in plain sight all along.

The Legacy of Mike and Eleven

stranger things

From the inception of Stranger Things in season 1, the duo of Mike and Eleven has held a central position in the series. This choice was logical as Eleven possessed extraordinary abilities and Mike was the de facto leader of their tight-knit group of friends.

Over the course of the show, Eleven’s backstory was meticulously unraveled, exposing her deep connection to the enigmatic Upside Down. Her character became pivotal in the battle against the malevolent forces that threatened Hawkins.

Furthermore, the early establishment of Mike and Eleven’s romance further cemented their roles as the show’s main characters. Despite changes in the surrounding cast, they remained the narrative’s focal point, often overshadowing characters like Dustin, Will, and Lucas. This shift was necessary to elucidate the intricacies of the Upside Down and the peril it posed, including the threat posed by Vecna.

The Unexpected Protagonist: Will Byers

Stranger Things

However, as Stranger Things season 5 approaches, there are indications that the spotlight may shift to an unexpected protagonist—Will Byers. Will’s association with the Upside Down began in the series’ inception when he was among the first to venture into its eerie realms, falling prey to its dark influence.

His ties to both the Mind Flayer and Vecna are undeniable and may prove instrumental in the group’s ultimate confrontation with these otherworldly entities.

Speculation abounds that Will Byers may meet a tragic end in Stranger Things season 5. His deep connection to the Upside Down, seemingly irreversible, might necessitate a sacrifice to close the rift between dimensions permanently.

Such a sacrifice would unequivocally establish Will as the show’s true protagonist, the culmination of his character arc and a testament to his resilience. Season 4’s conclusion teased Will’s renewed psychic link with Vecna, foreshadowing its significance in the impending battle.

Will Byers: The Overlooked Hero

Stranger Things season 5’s pivot to Will Byers as the potential protagonist may seem unconventional at first glance. However, upon closer examination, it becomes apparent that Will has played a pivotal role since the very beginning.

Even during his absence in season 1, his disappearance was the catalyst that bound the group together and set the narrative in motion. Mike and Eleven’s relationship, a central plot thread, owes its existence to Will’s mysterious vanishing.

Furthermore, the show’s creators have hinted at a more prominent role for Will Byers in season 5, suggesting a significant development for the character. Perhaps this is the moment when his latent potential is fully realized, allowing him to surmount the challenges that have hindered him in the past.

Stranger Things has diligently portrayed Will’s character development, delving into his emotions, especially his feelings for Mike, and his struggles with mental health following his ordeal in the Upside Down. As the series concludes, it appears that Will Byers is poised to claim his rightful place as the protagonist.

In the twilight of Stranger Things, the unexpected hero may finally step into the limelight, concluding a captivating narrative that has enthralled audiences for years.
