The Indian horror-comedy film “Stree 2” has shattered box office records since its release earlier this month. In just 12 days, the movie earned a total of $70.1 million globally. This outstanding performance not only broke many records within Bollywood but indicates growing interest among audiences for supernatural storylines.
Released during India’s Independence Day celebrations, “Stree 2” continues the story of 2018’s surprise hit “Stree.” The sequel follows main character Vicky and his friends as they face a new supernatural threat in their town. A headless ghost has begun kidnapping women in Chanderi. Actor Rajkummar Rao reprises his starring role as Vicky to confront this mysterious creature.
Audiences have turned out in huge numbers both within India and overseas. The film made $59.3 million from theaters in its home market alone. It also earned an impressive $2.57 million during its opening weekend showing in the United States, breaking into the top 10 highest-grossing movies. Industry experts credit factors like the original film’s popularity, strategic release timing, and star power for the sequel’s abundant success.
According to box office records, “Stree 2” now holds several new titles. It is currently the highest-grossing Hindi-language movie of 2024 so far. The film sits in second place among all Indian releases this year behind “Kalki 2898 AD.” Additionally, “Stree 2” ranks ninth for all-time highest-earning Hindi films and nineteenth for top Indian movies overall.
Producer Dinesh Vijan has confirmed plans are already underway for “Stree 3,” slated for 2026. This breakout performance bodes well for other upcoming supernatural movies under Vijan’s production banner too, like “Vampires of Vijaynagar” and “Bhediya 2.” As “Stree 2” continues dominating theaters worldwide, it cements its place in Bollywood history and opens the door for more fantasy-focused storytelling in Indian cinema going forward.
