Jonathan Bailey Boards Jurassic World: Rebirth as Jeff Goldblum Returns

Schedule juggling lets the Wicked actor headline Universal’s $265 million dinosaur reboot while Jeff Goldblum anchors its legacy.

Jonathan Bailey has formally joined the ensemble of Jurassic World: Rebirth, stepping into an as-yet-unnamed lead role opposite Jeff Goldblum, whose cameo will mark Dr. Ian Malcolm’s first appearance since 2022’s Dominion — a pairing confirmed by director Gareth Edwards after Deadline broke the news last week. Filming began in March on soundstages outside London before relocating to Thailand and Malta, where cast member Scarlett Johansson reportedly chartered a yacht so the company could unwind between night shoots.

Bailey’s schedule briefly overlapped with post-production pickups for Jon M. Chu’s two-part Wicked, but Universal arranged a three-week hiatus that allowed the actor to finish musical ADR in Los Angeles before rejoining the dinosaur thriller. Studio insiders say the dual commitments underscore the franchise’s new strategy of blending Broadway-honed talent with blockbuster veterans to refresh its demographic reach.

Goldblum, who filmed his scenes in May, appears for “several pivotal minutes” advising a new generation of scientists after the Isla Nublar incidents; the cameo was pitched as a bridge to future installments rather than a nostalgia beat. His return comes amid a larger creative reset that began when David Leitch exited the project in early 2024, citing scheduling conflicts, and Edwards was hired two weeks later to steer a $265 million production he describes as “survival horror with teeth.”

Universal has assembled a cast that also features Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend and newcomer Audrina Miranda, but carries no legacy characters beyond Goldblum; analysts believe that distancing from Chris Pratt’s storyline positions the film as a clean entry point for audiences.

Early tracking suggests a $120-to-$130 million domestic launch over the Fourth of July corridor, a figure buoyed by strong test-screening scores and a marketing campaign that emphasizes practical animatronics over CG spectacle. Should those numbers hold, Rebirth would give Universal its first $1 billion global contender since 2023’s Oppenheimer, reinforcing studio confidence in a post-trilogy reboot conceived as the opening chapter of a new saga.
