Bradley Cooper will appear as Jor-El in James Gunn’s forthcoming Superman film, the director confirmed during a weekend interview, saying he wanted “someone who could walk in the footsteps of Marlon Brando” yet remain believable as the hero’s father. The cameo came together after Gunn placed a single phone call to the longtime collaborator who voiced Rocket Raccoon in his Marvel trilogy, with Cooper agreeing to travel to the United Kingdom for a day of filming.
Cooper’s scenes were shot inside a 3-D volume stage, allowing visual-effects artists to render the Kryptonian scientist as a hologram that greets infant Kal-El during the film’s prologue. Gunn acknowledged the appearance only after weeks of speculation on Threads, clarifying that the role is brief but “pivotal to Clark’s moral compass.” The disclosure quieted rumors that Cooper might voice a villain, though the director later noted the creative team continues to refine story beats in post-production.
Principal photography began in March and is presently split between Atlanta soundstages and downtown Cleveland, where skyscraper façades have doubled for the Daily Planet. With shooting expected to wrap before August, Gunn told fans on Instagram that the edit is “almost locked,” pending final visual-effects shots. The cast pairs newcomer David Corenswet with Rachel Brosnahan, while Nicholas Hoult, freshly bald for Lex Luthor, quipped that “there is nothing I won’t do for a role.”
Hoult’s dedication, along with Cooper’s one-day cameo, underscores Gunn’s strategy of mixing established names with rising talent to anchor the first chapter of DC’s reset. Analysts writing for genre outlets suggest the surprise casting could lift domestic opening-weekend estimates above $150 million without materially increasing production costs, thanks to Cooper’s favored-nations fee. The film is slated for theatrical release on 11 July 2026, positioned as the cornerstone of DC Studios’ new slate under Gunn and Peter Safran.
