Pentagon challenges A House of Dynamite as filmmakers defend realism

An internal memo questions the thriller’s missile-defense portrayal while advisers and experts say the creative choices reflect real procedures shaped for drama.

George Bigelow’s nuclear thriller A House of Dynamite has prompted an unusual pushback from the U.S. defense establishment, which is disputing the film’s depiction of America’s ability to intercept an incoming intercontinental ballistic missile.

An internal memo from the Missile Defense Agency circulated in mid-October contends the movie’s suggestion of a coin-flip intercept probability does not reflect current capabilities, asserting that ground-based interceptor testing in recent years has performed far better than the historic average. The agency said it prepared talking points so leadership would not be caught off guard by questions about the movie, which is now streaming after a limited theatrical run.

The film unfolds in near real time as officials across Fort Greely, the Pentagon, Strategic Command, and the White House confront an unattributed launch on a crash-course for Chicago. Creative choices around an unidentified adversary and a failed intercept sit at the heart of the dispute: the memo emphasizes that today’s system is designed to counter a limited attack and has recorded strong recent test performance, while the movie posits a scenario in which two shots fail and decision makers are left weighing retaliation without certainty of attribution.

Filmmakers have defended their approach as a character-driven exploration of crisis management informed by policy advisers and former officials. A technical consultant with experience at U.S. Strategic Command has said the team aimed to portray authentic procedures, even as some beats were shaped for dramatic focus.

Subject-matter experts note that several elements are plausible in outline but debated in detail. Analysts told one outlet that an entirely unattributed launch is unlikely given space-based detection systems, though cyber interference is a theoretical concern; they also said the oft-cited 61 percent figure for intercept success reflects decades of mixed tests rather than the most recent upgrades.

The film’s attention to real facilities and protocols, including continuity-of-government sites, tracks with open-source descriptions, while its emphasis on human judgment under extreme time pressure mirrors how such exercises are actually trained. The back-and-forth underscores a familiar friction point between national-security storytellers and the Pentagon over where dramatic license ends and public misunderstanding begins.
