Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande attended the New York premiere of Wicked: For Good on Monday night but skipped traditional red-carpet interviews after Erivo fell ill and lost her voice, capping a demanding and sometimes fraught global press tour. Universal representatives informed reporters ahead of the event that the two leads would not be speaking to media, while confirming they would still walk the carpet together in support of the film’s final major launch before release.
The pair arrived arm in arm at the Manhattan premiere, posing for photographs alongside director Jon M. Chu and co-stars including Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and Ethan Slater. Instead of rotating through the usual gauntlet of outlets, they made a brief appearance on the official livestream, where Grande spoke on Erivo’s behalf and explained that her co-star needed to rest her voice. The singer used the moment to highlight Erivo’s Grammy-nominated solo work and forthcoming book, turning the short conversation into a public show of support as Erivo looked on, occasionally adding a few hoarse words.
The decision to scale back interviews comes after a string of setbacks that have put unusual pressure on the press campaign. Earlier in November, Grande missed the São Paulo premiere because of aircraft safety issues and later addressed disappointed fans on social media, urging them not to wish harm on her team. Days later in Singapore, a man jumped a barricade and grabbed her on the red carpet before being restrained, an incident that saw Erivo step between her co-star and the intruder. The man, identified in court as 26-year-old Johnson Wen, has since been sentenced to nine days in jail for being a public nuisance.
In recent interviews, Erivo has spoken about feeling uneasy when members of the public try to hold or grab her during fan encounters, framing physical boundaries as a basic condition of feeling safe at events. At a Los Angeles screening the night before the New York premiere, she alluded to the strain of the tour, saying the team had been through a great deal even in the past week. Against that backdrop, the New York appearance functioned as both a final promotional push and a visible attempt to balance health, security and fan expectations as Wicked: For Good heads into its November 21 theatrical opening.
