Adam Wingard Exits Face/Off 2 as Paramount Opens Director Search

The studio is taking pitches for a new take on the long-developing follow-up to John Woo’s 1997 action hit.

Paramount’s long-gestating follow-up to the 1997 action hit Face/Off is back in flux after director Adam Wingard stepped away, leaving the studio hunting for a new filmmaker to take the project forward. The Hollywood Reporter said Wingard exited last summer after a mutual decision to part ways, and the sequel has shifted into an open assignment, with Paramount hearing pitches from interested directors.

Wingard signed on in 2021, paired again with his frequent writing partner Simon Barrett, after Paramount’s plan for the property changed course. The studio first announced a Face/Off remake in 2019, then retooled the effort into a sequel rather than a straight reboot, according to earlier reporting and project history. Since then, progress has moved in fits and starts, with no production start date or release window on the calendar.

The reset does not mean the studio has shelved the film. Letting directors bring their own take can speed a greenlight by pairing a pitch with a filmmaker’s package and a workable script plan, while giving Paramount room to decide how closely a new story should track John Woo’s original. That 1997 movie starred John Travolta as FBI agent Sean Archer and Nicolas Cage as terrorist Castor Troy, with the men trading identities through surgery in a premise that became a calling card for late-’90s studio action.

No deal has been announced for Cage or Travolta to return, and the director search raises practical questions about what version of Face/Off 2 Paramount wants to make. A direct continuation would need a narrative hook that justifies revisiting characters whose cat-and-mouse story reached a clean stopping point, while a new-cast approach would lean on the brand name and the face-swap concept rather than star power.

For Paramount, the decision lands in a period when studios keep leaning on familiar titles to cut through a crowded theatrical marketplace. The studio now needs a filmmaker who can sell a pitch that feels commercially legible, deliverable on budget, and worthy of reopening one of the era’s most gleefully high-concept action movies.
