Elliot Page says roles haven’t followed despite acclaimed turn in “The Odyssey”

The Oscar nominee reflects on his summer blockbuster, his discomfort filming "Inception" years earlier, and why he feels more prepared than ever for strong roles.

Elliot Page revealed this week that his performance in Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has not translated into new job offers, telling podcast host Kevin McCarthy that his phone has stayed quiet since the film’s July release. Asked directly whether he was fielding a wave of calls after appearing in one of the year’s highest-grossing films, Page answered simply that he was not, adding that he would welcome the opportunity if anyone wanted to reach out.

Page played Sinon, a role Nolan’s screenplay frames as a cousin to Matt Damon’s Odysseus, in an ensemble that also includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson. The character does not appear in Homer’s original poem; Sinon originates instead in Virgil’s “Aeneid,” and Nolan wrote the figure into his adaptation. Page’s casting became a flashpoint over the summer, drawing sustained debate among commentators on opposing sides of Hollywood’s ongoing arguments over representation, even as critics largely praised his performance.

Speaking on “On Film… With Kevin McCarthy,” Page said he currently has no project lined up and is not taking a break by choice, adding that he hopes to find strong material rather than simply stay busy for its own sake. He also reflected on the contrast between his current outlook and his experience filming Nolan’s “Inception” in 2010, a decade before he came out as transgender.

Page described feeling personally uneasy during that earlier production despite enjoying the collaboration, and said the comfort he now feels in his own identity has left him better equipped to deliver strong performances. He pointed to his role in “Juno” as an earlier example of feeling more grounded on screen, and said that sense of ease has only grown since his transition.

Page thanked Nolan for including him in “The Odyssey,” calling it a full-circle moment when production wrapped. The film, released July 17, has become the year’s second-highest-grossing release and is generating early awards-season attention, a commercial and critical success that has so far not translated into a follow-up role for Page.
