Kill Jackie Review: Catherine Zeta-Jones Commands a Thriller That Keeps Its Distance

Jackie Price turns down an extra two million dollars for a painting because the prospective buyer wipes his nose with his hand. She has watched him from another room, unseen, while he submits his bid. The money interests her; so does the pleasure of deciding what sort of person deserves to possess the art. Catherine Zeta-Jones plays the decision with the composure of someone who has never had to explain a refusal twice.

Later, after Jackie’s neighbour is killed, a detective suggests she might want the danger to be about her because she is bored. It sounds impertinent, but the sale makes the question harder to dismiss. Jackie has arranged a life in which she can judge people at a distance and discard them for minor offenses. An assassin is a rather less obliging applicant. For a while, I wondered if Kill Jackie might be interested in what happens when a woman accustomed to choosing everyone around her loses that privilege.

Jackie is a wealthy art dealer and former cocaine smuggler. After an attempt on her life, she learns that the Seven Demons, a formidable team of killers, are coming for her. She draws on old instincts and useful contacts, identifying threats and going after the people hunting her. The premise gives Zeta-Jones a splendid excuse to move through expensive rooms with an air of mild disappointment in everyone else. Her Jackie can be funny, flirtatious, and frighteningly composed, sometimes within the same encounter.

There is a particular pleasure in seeing a woman in her 50s occupy this role without the series treating her age as an obstacle she must overcome. Jackie’s authority is already established when the shooting starts. Zeta-Jones makes her fastidiousness part of that authority: the art buyer’s manners offend her because she has the power to make an offense costly. Her control can also put distance between Jackie and the audience. When she meets another twist with a knowing look, the performance preserves her mystery, though it does not always let us feel the shock beneath it.

I nearly took that distance for the show’s central idea. Then Sam arrives. Daniel Ings plays Jackie’s lawyer as a man whose professional relationship has carried him well beyond anything a lawyer should reasonably have to insure against. His panic gives the pursuit a scale Jackie’s confidence tends to erase.

Charlie, her assistant, offers a different measure. She knows something of Jackie’s darker past and stays close to her anyway. Between Sam’s alarm and Charlie’s loyalty, Jackie has people who can reveal what her polished self-command costs them. The series is liveliest when their responses interrupt hers.

Kill Jackie Review

It also knows how to make pursuit look enjoyable. The chases, changes of location, music, and successive encounters with the Demons keep the eight episodes moving. Jackie can call on Poltergeist, a concierge service able to supply her with what she needs across countries. The service is an amusing extension of her art-world life: even in a fight for survival, she has access to excellent customer support.

Yet it raises a suspense problem. Each resource that arrives on demand makes her predicament feel a little easier to manage. In one confrontation with two armed drug dealers, a pump-action shotgun appears in her hands so abruptly that the scene invites a practical question at exactly the moment it needs us to fear for her.

Perhaps I am asking the wrong thing of an extravagant assassin thriller. Jackie’s composure, the improbable assistance, the procession of dangerous opponents: much of it is designed to be enjoyed at speed. Sam’s bewilderment helps the joke land because he reacts to the danger that Jackie takes in stride. The series does not need every escape to withstand a forensic inspection. It does need consequences to last when it shifts from the fun of keeping Jackie alive to the pain of seeing someone near her die.

One significant early loss is given room to hurt, then largely recedes after an episode of grief. The speed is striking because Kill Jackie also wants Jackie’s guarded relationships to carry its deeper story. If Charlie’s loyalty and Sam’s fear show us the human beings behind her network of contacts, their bonds cannot function solely as fresh stakes for the next attack. Jackie may choose to move on quickly. The series seems to move on with her, leaving little space to tell the difference between a woman concealing her grief and a story losing interest in it.

That leaves Zeta-Jones doing a difficult balancing act. She makes Jackie’s appetite for danger entertaining, and Sam’s presence occasionally lets us see the absurdity of that appetite from outside it. I remain less convinced by the series’ claim on her private life. Jackie’s refusal of the higher bid tells us how easily she can shut someone out. After the killing begins, the more revealing question is who can still get through to her.

Kill Jackie premieres on Amazon Prime Video and AMC+ on October 2, 2026. The high-octane revenge thriller follows a wealthy art dealer with a secret past as a cocaine smuggler who turns the tables on a squad of elite hitmen sent to eliminate her.

The Review

Kill Jackie

6 Score

Catherine Zeta-Jones makes Jackie’s immaculate self-command a pleasure to watch, and Daniel Ings gives the danger a badly needed human scale. Kill Jackie moves briskly and has fun with the privileges that keep its heroine alive. Its deeper ambitions falter when a major loss fades too quickly to change her. The assassins can reach Jackie; the people she cares about have a harder time getting through.

PROS

  • Zeta-Jones’s commanding, sly performance
  • Ings’s frightened comic counterpoint
  • Brisk pursuit and stylish settings

CONS

  • A significant loss has little lasting effect
  • Convenient resources weaken suspense
  • Jackie’s closest bonds remain underdeveloped
