James Gunn, the visionary director behind the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, is all set to direct Superman: Legacy, one of the most highly anticipated films of the revamped DC Universe.

Gunn, who has been tasked with bringing a new era of content to the DC Universe that can rival and even surpass the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has already caused quite a stir in the industry by announcing that Henry Cavill will be stepping down from his role as Superman, which sparked controversy among fans.

After months of speculation, Gunn announced on his personal Twitter account that he will be directing Superman: Legacy, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

This film will be the first title to be released as part of what Gunn and DC Studios co-head Peter Safran are calling the DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which will also include The Batman Part II by Matt Reeves, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing.

Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas.

As the personification of truth, justice, and the American way of life, Superman is guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I hadn’t realized. pic.twitter.com/ohQNV8nI4g

— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) March 15, 2023

According to Gunn, Superman is a “big goofball” and a “very idealistic Kansas country boy” whose defining characteristic is his innate goodness. His biggest weakness is that he will never kill anyone and he doesn’t want to hurt a living being.

Gunn’s appointment as the director of Superman: Legacy has created a lot of buzz in the industry. His success with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and his unique style of storytelling have made him one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood.

With his creative vision and his passion for storytelling, fans can expect a fresh take on the iconic superhero that is sure to delight audiences worldwide.

As one of the most highly anticipated films of the revamped DC Universe, Superman: Legacy is sure to be a blockbuster hit that will redefine the way we see superheroes on the big screen.
