A Reddit user, Art_from_the_machine, recently announced the development of a mod for Skyrim VR that incorporates ChatGPT and a text-to-speech tool (xVASynth) to facilitate interactive conversations with in-game characters.
The mod utilizes version 3.5 of the language model, as the newer version 4.0, while more powerful, takes too long to respond and hampers enjoyable discussions. The mod creator describes the solution as follows:
NPCs will now be aware of their current location and the time of day, enabling them to respond dynamically to the game world rather than simply waiting for the player’s input.
Expanding the Realm of Possibilities
This groundbreaking mod opens up a world of new possibilities, such as merchants who will not attempt to trade with players when their shops are closed, NPCs who observe and react to player actions (like looting a chest or picking a flower), and even characters who comment on the player’s choices.
To help NPCs “step into their role,” each character receives a unique, individually crafted invitation. In order to make the response time of NPCs appear more natural and less obtrusive, the mod cleverly utilizes phrases like “let me think.”
Although incorporating facial expressions or thinking gestures could further enhance the experience, the mod already includes lip synchronization, which is essential for maintaining immersion.
