Initially unfamiliar to most audiences in 2014, the Guardians of the Galaxy swiftly became some of the most beloved characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Nearly a decade later, the charismatic crew of intergalactic misfits returns for a third and final adventure to bid their fans farewell. In the interim, James Gunn, the director of the trilogy, made a surprising move by joining the rival DC Studios as its head.
Notwithstanding his allegiance to the “opposition,” the 56-year-old filmmaker crafted an exceptional conclusion for his characters, as evidenced by the overwhelmingly positive reviews.
Boasting a score of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and an even higher 95% from audiences, some have deemed it the best MCU film since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Yet, despite the glowing reception, the box office returns have not matched the enthusiasm surrounding the movie.
Marvel and Disney’s Declining Revenues?
In the Hollywood film industry, the first weekend’s performance is crucial as it sets the stage for the subsequent weeks, which typically see a drop in revenue.
This makes the opening weekend a vital indicator. As such, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 reportedly raked in $118 million globally during its first weekend. Although an impressive sum, these figures pale in comparison to previous MCU productions.
For instance, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 garnered $146 million during its opening weekend in 2017, while another highly anticipated MCU project, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, earned $186 million.
Nevertheless, James Gunn’s latest film can take solace in outperforming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which only brought in $106 million and is projected to conclude its theatrical run with “merely” $475 million.
In general, since Spider-Man: No Way Home, MCU films have failed to surpass the billion-dollar mark, although the second Doctor Strange installment came close. The final performance of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remains to be seen.
Heading for a Box Office Finale
Despite the warm reception from both critics and audiences, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s box office performance has not lived up to expectations.
This may raise concerns about the future of the MCU, especially considering the film was expected to revitalize the franchise following Avengers: Endgame. As the final chapter of the Guardians’ journey comes to a close, it remains uncertain whether the MCU can regain its former box office glory.
