In a remarkable selection for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2024 Oscars, Belgium has chosen “Omen,” the debut feature film from rapper-turned-filmmaker Baloji. The film made its mark in the cinematic world by premiering in the Un Certain Regard sidebar at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2023.

“Omen” delves into the compelling story of Koffi, a young Congolese man who, after spending years residing in Belgium, embarks on a poignant journey back to his birthplace, Kinshasa.

His return is not just a geographical shift but a profound exploration of his family’s complexities and the intricacies of his cultural heritage. Through this introspective lens, the film offers a glimpse into the multifaceted aspects of identity, belonging, and self-discovery.

A Diverse International Production

“Omen” is a testament to global collaboration, representing a Belgian-Dutch-Congolese-French-South African co-production. At Cannes 2023, the film garnered acclaim and recognition, securing the prestigious New Vision Award.

The stellar cast includes Marc Zinga, renowned for his collaborations with the Dardenne brothers, alongside Lucie Debay, Eliane Umuhire, Yves-Marina Gnahoua, and Marcel Otete Kabeya.

Belgium’s cinematic gem, “Omen,” is set to captivate audiences with its theatrical release scheduled for November 15. The film’s distribution in France is entrusted to Pan Distribution, while Memento International is tasked with managing worldwide sales.

The collaborative efforts of production companies such as Special Touch Studios, Wrong Men, New Amsterdam Film Company, Tosala Films, RadicalMedia, Serendipity Films, and Big World Cinema have paved the way for this remarkable cinematic creation.

Belgium’s Legacy at the Oscars

This selection marks Belgium’s continued commitment to promoting exceptional cinema on the international stage. In the previous year, Belgium’s Oscar submission was the Cannes-winning title “Close,” directed by Lukas Dhont. The film’s exceptional journey included a Grand Prix win at Cannes and a nomination in the Best International Feature category at the Oscars.

As Baloji’s “Omen” represents Belgium’s cinematic prowess on the global platform, it stands as a testament to the nation’s dedication to storytelling that transcends borders and resonates with audiences worldwide.

The 2024 Oscars eagerly anticipate the unique narrative and artistic brilliance that “Omen” promises to bring to the international cinematic landscape.
