The world of pirates and adventure in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of “One Piece” is set to be an epic and enduring journey, as producers Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements unveil ambitious plans for the series. In a recent interview with Deadline, the duo revealed their hopes for the show, suggesting it could potentially run for six seasons, with the wealth of source material at their disposal.
“We have hopes for 12 seasons, there’s so much material,” shared Adelstein, highlighting the vast narrative universe created by Eiichiro Oda in the “One Piece” manga.
Clements echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the sheer volume of content they have to work with, stating, “We’re over 1,080 chapters at this point in the manga… We have plans with Matt Owens for how we would break multiple seasons, and I think even if we did six seasons, we would probably only use up half of the chapters of the manga. It really could go on and on and on.”
The “One Piece” manga, serialized in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine since 1997, is still ongoing, and its captivating world continues to expand. The anime adaptation, which premiered in Japan in 1999, has already aired a staggering 1,072 episodes, along with 13 specials and 15 feature-length films.
Clements shared insights into their forward-thinking approach, explaining, “We’ve definitely had more thorough conversations about what we would do with Season 2 should we have the opportunity, and then less extensive conversations about where we would go for seasons three to six. The one thing I would say, we’re all unified in the parts of the manga that you just absolutely cannot eliminate, and that’s our guiding principle, the stories that we know and the characters that we know are important to the fans.”
