Actress and producer Anna Kendrick took an unexpected career turn after facing challenges bringing her new project to life. Kendrick, best known for her roles in films like Pitch Perfect, directed and stars in Woman of the Hour, a thriller premiering October 18 on Netflix.

Kendrick had worked on the film for two years as both star and producer when delays caused production to stall. With an abrupt start date looming, directors were reluctant to take on the project under tight constraints. Thinking about her commitment to the film’s vision, Kendrick volunteered to direct.

“I kept wondering how I would make it as the director,” Kendrick said. Though nervous, she believed in the script and saw potential outcomes no one else might. Her pitch was successful, leaving Kendrick suddenly interviewing staff and crewing up. Seeking advice, Kendrick called co-star Brittany Snow who told her “You’ll know what to do on set,” easing anxieties.

Woman of the Hour is based on the true story of 1970s actress Cheryl Bradshaw, played by Kendrick. When Bradshaw and a serial killer appear on the game show The Dating Game, their encounter takes a frightening turn.

Kendrick’s debut received praise at its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film showcases how unexpected challenges can lead one down new career paths in Hollywood. Kendrick’s journey from actress to director exemplifies artistic growth through willingness to take risks in the face of obstacles.
