Amazon MGM Studios is preparing for the theatrical release of “Red One” on November 15, 2024. The studio invested $250 million into the film, directing by Jake Kasdan and starring major Hollywood talents. Dwayne Johnson leads the cast as Callum Drift, head of security at the North Pole. He must team up with Chris Evans’ bounty hunter character Jack O’Malley to rescue Santa Claus, played by J.K. Simmons.
According to the film’s trailer, nefarious forces have kidnapped Santa and aim to ruin Christmas. Drift and O’Malley embark on a mission to save him. The trailer showcases a blend of big-budget action scenes and references to Christmas lore. It hints that the plot involves portals hidden in toy stores and battles against evil snowmen and monsters.
Other notable stars include Lucy Liu as Zoe, who briefs O’Malley on the rescue mission. Kiernan Shipka takes on the role of Grýla, a creature from Icelandic folklore. “Game of Thrones” actor Kristofer Hivju plays Krampus.
Bonnie Hunt joins as Mrs. Claus. Nick Kroll and Wesley Kimmel have undisclosed roles as well. The film introduces a talking polar bear named Garcia who aids the main characters. Special effects include a toy car transforming into a full-size vehicle.
Director Kasdan and Johnson previously worked together on successful “Jumanji” sequels. Their collaboration suggests “Red One” has blockbuster potential despite Johnson’s box office successes and failures in recent years. The movie will have an IMAX run, indicating the studio’s confidence in its visuals. However, industry analysts speculate it may quickly move to streaming platforms to capitalize on the Christmas period.
As Amazon MGM’s biggest theatrical film, “Red One” aims to start a new franchise. But it must overcome reported challenges and pull off its atypical mashup of genres. With its stars, budget, and unique holiday action premise, it positions itself as a potential season hit. Whether it can blend Christmas charm with summer excitement remains to be seen but promises viewers an original holiday experience.
