Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, is teaming up with James Patterson to co-author a thriller that will be released around the world in 2026. HarperCollins acquired the rights to publish the novel in 15 languages following a highly competitive auction that drew industry-wide attention earlier this year. The collaboration between the world’s most-followed digital creator and one of the best-selling authors of all time marks a significant crossover between traditional publishing and creator-led entertainment.

The story will center on a global competition involving 100 contestants. These individuals are put through physically and psychologically intense challenges in hostile environments across the world. With a grand prize of one billion dollars, the competition pushes participants to their limits as they face betrayals, form alliances, and navigate life-threatening obstacles. Eliminations are part of the process, and some may not survive. The format bears similarities to the high-stakes contests seen in Donaldson’s viral YouTube videos, combined with the pacing and tension Patterson is known for in his thriller novels.

The title of the book has not yet been revealed. It will be released through HarperCollins’ William Morrow imprint in the U.S. and HarperFiction in the U.K. The international rollout includes editions in French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Dutch, Italian, Polish, Czech, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Swedish, and both European and Brazilian Portuguese. The scale of the release mirrors the scope of the project itself, with marketing efforts expected to span multiple continents and distribution planned for a synchronized launch.

The publishing deal was arranged by HarperCollins CEO Brian Murray and William Morrow Group President and Publisher Liate Stehlik. Patterson’s representation came from Robert Barnett and Deneen Howell of Williams & Connolly. MrBeast was represented by Byrd Leavell and Albert Lee of UTA. While financial terms were not disclosed, sources familiar with the auction process indicated offers reached into the eight-figure range. The package included television and film rights, though no production announcements have followed as of now.

For Donaldson, this project is his first novel and expands his reach into traditional media. In 2024, his YouTube channel became the most subscribed on the platform. With more than two billion views each month, his audience spans a wide demographic, often drawn to elaborate stunts, philanthropic missions, and extreme cash-prize competitions. His Prime Video series Beast Games became the most-watched unscripted program on the service and has been renewed for two additional seasons. He also founded Feastables, a consumer snack brand that has achieved rapid growth, and leads philanthropic efforts through initiatives like #TeamTrees and Beast Philanthropy.

Donaldson said he was excited to work with Patterson on the upcoming novel. “I’m pumped to be teaming up with James, one of the best-selling authors of all time, on this action-packed story,” he said. “We’re both passionate about inspiring people around the world to read more, and I hope this also opens doors for other creators looking to get published.”

James Patterson, whose books have sold over 400 million copies worldwide, is no stranger to partnerships. His previous co-authors include Bill Clinton, Dolly Parton, and Michael Crichton. He has created several long-running fiction franchises such as Alex Cross, Women’s Murder Club, and Maximum Ride, and has written nonfiction titles on historical and cultural figures, including Tiger Woods, John Lennon, and members of the Kennedy family.

Discussing the collaboration with Donaldson, Patterson said the partnership emerged from an in-person meeting at MrBeast’s studio. “One thought has driven my choices for the past couple of years: ‘My time here is short – what can I do most beautifully?’” he said. “I met MrBeast at his studio; we talked for several hours and settled on an idea we were incredibly excited to turn into a novel. I think it’s going to turn on readers all over the world.”

The concept of the book draws from both creators’ strengths: Donaldson’s expertise in high-concept video content built for wide appeal, and Patterson’s extensive background in commercial fiction that often centers on suspense, competition, and psychological intensity. The resulting storyline is designed to maintain relentless pacing while offering insight into character motivations, shifting allegiances, and interpersonal dynamics under extreme pressure.

According to HarperCollins executives, the scale of the rollout was tailored to reflect the combined reach of both authors. “In the age of social media, storytelling has the power to travel the globe in an instant,” said HarperCollins CEO Brian Murray. “When the world’s #1 thriller writer and the #1 social media creator come together to write a book, it demands a global, simultaneous release, which HarperCollins is uniquely positioned to provide.”

The global publishing program behind the novel will involve simultaneous launches across multiple regions. Retail coordination is expected to include both online and physical channels, supported by targeted digital campaigns and in-person promotional appearances. Although the company has not confirmed details about marketing plans, similar campaigns for other high-profile releases have included city-based events, livestreamed Q&A sessions, and social media partnerships with creators and influencers.

The joint project also reflects a growing shift within the entertainment industry, where creators who built audiences online are now moving into traditional media. Donaldson’s move into publishing comes after similar transitions by other digital personalities into podcasting, television, and product development. His ability to maintain high viewer engagement has led to expanded opportunities beyond YouTube, including direct partnerships with major media companies and consumer brands.

Patterson, who has long been a leading figure in commercial publishing, has consistently adapted to evolving reader habits. He was among the first mainstream authors to embrace co-authorship as a strategy for increasing volume without sacrificing brand consistency. His writing process, which involves detailed outlines and collaboration with co-authors, allows for the rapid development of multiple titles per year. By teaming up with Donaldson, he enters a new type of collaboration that merges digital-first storytelling with mass-market fiction.

While specific narrative details remain under wraps, the core premise—100 contestants, extreme locations, escalating risk, and a life-changing cash prize—echoes real-world survival competitions, with a narrative arc that emphasizes character development and ethical tension. Participants must balance self-preservation with the need to lead, forming alliances and facing betrayals that impact their chances. The structure allows for episodic tension and evolving dynamics, both of which are familiar territory for fans of Patterson’s work and viewers of Donaldson’s videos.

Publishing insiders say the decision to release the book in 15 languages was driven by both authors’ strong global followings. Patterson’s books have consistently performed well in translation, with entire franchises adapted for international markets. Donaldson’s digital footprint extends across continents, and his content regularly trends in countries outside North America. By coordinating the release across linguistic and cultural markets, HarperCollins aims to position the book for commercial success on a scale rarely seen in debut fiction.

Though details around possible adaptations remain speculative, the premise lends itself to visual storytelling. The high-concept format, large cast of characters, and cinematic set pieces have potential for serialized television or feature-length treatment. Donaldson’s existing relationships with streaming platforms and Patterson’s history of licensing to film and television studios suggest multiple avenues for future development.

The book’s timeline targets a 2026 release, which places it within a publishing cycle designed for global blockbusters. The extended runway gives the team time to finalize editorial, coordinate translations, and execute a tiered marketing plan that can build anticipation across multiple quarters.

The collaboration between MrBeast and James Patterson reflects ongoing changes in how media projects are conceived, marketed, and consumed. As creators with distinct audiences and strengths, their partnership brings together two different approaches to engagement: one grounded in traditional narrative publishing, the other rooted in algorithm-driven digital content. This convergence signals new possibilities for authors, platforms, and publishers looking to reach global audiences with multiplatform storytelling.
