Alexander Skarsgård and Benny Safdie will receive top honorary prizes at this year’s Stockholm International Film Festival, with the Swedish actor set for the Stockholm Achievement Award and the American filmmaker selected for the Stockholm Visionary Award. Both honorees will appear at the festival in November, where Skarsgård will accompany Harry Lighton’s motorcycle drama Pillion and Safdie will present The Smashing Machine.
The Achievement Award recognizes sustained excellence and range, and the festival’s announcement highlights Skarsgård’s two-decade career across U.S. and European projects and serial work, from studio features to prestige television. His festival visit dovetails with a busy fall on the circuit as Pillion continues its rollout following high-profile premieres. Ceremony details for his tribute are scheduled around festival screenings.
Safdie’s Visionary Award acknowledges distinctive filmmaking craft and risk-taking. The director arrives in Stockholm days after a headline-making festival run for The Smashing Machine, his first feature as sole director, writer and editor. The Stockholm honor positions the film for Nordic audiences while underscoring the festival’s emphasis on bold auteur work; past recipients of the Visionary prize include Wong Kar Wai and Céline Sciamma.
This year’s Stockholm edition runs November 5–16 and is dedicated to the legacy of David Lynch, who opened the festival’s first edition with Wild at Heart and later received a lifetime honor in Stockholm. The Lynch tribute will span talks and special screenings, providing a backdrop for the Skarsgård and Safdie tributes and reinforcing the festival’s heritage of championing formally inventive cinema.
Festival organizers frame the two awards as complementary: one celebrating a homegrown star whose filmography moves easily between arthouse and mainstream, the other spotlighting a filmmaker whose latest work extends a reputation for nervy, high-intensity storytelling into a new solo phase. Together, the honors anchor a lineup expected to mix international premieres, Face2Face conversations and red carpet events across central Stockholm venues.
