Alexander Akin’s WWII coming-of-age drama Amrum has secured another round of distribution deals as sales agent Beta Cinema continues to build out the title’s footprint following its Cannes Premiere debut in May. New agreements include Australia and New Zealand with Palace Films, India with Big Tree Entertainment, Latin America with Synapse Distribution, and Portugal with Pris, expanding on previously announced pacts such as North America with Kino Lorber and earlier European and Asian pickups.
Set on the North Sea island that gives the film its name, Amrum follows 12-year-old Nanning in spring 1945 as he tries to help his mother through the final weeks of the war, only to face a different, closer threat once peace arrives. The film is directed by Fatih Akin and co-written with Hark Bohm, whose own childhood memories inspired the script. The cast features newcomer Jasper Billerbeck alongside Laura Tonke and Diane Kruger.
The project has drawn steady interest from buyers since Cannes, where Kino Lorber boarded for the U.S. and Canada and positioned the film for a theatrical release ahead of ancillary windows. The continued sales suggest confidence in the title’s crossover potential among specialty distributors focused on prestige European cinema.
Amrum opens this week in German-speaking markets, with Warner Bros. handling the local rollout, and is dated for France on December 24 under the title Une enfance allemande: Île d’Amrum, 1945. Additional territories will follow as regional distributors slot the film into Q4 and early 2026 calendars.
Beyond its market performance, the film has garnered attention for its restrained visual style and focus on post-conflict moral uncertainty through a child’s perspective, elements emphasized in sales materials and early festival notices. With fresh deals now signed across Oceania, South Asia and Latin America, the title’s reach extends well beyond its European base, rounding out a global release plan ahead of awards submissions in select markets.
