While Polyphony Digital is overseeing the systematic expansion of the latest installment of the Gran Turismo series, the process of implementing each machine requires considerable time and careful work. Developers have revealed the details.

As the brand celebrates its 25th anniversary, which is permanently etched in the consciousness of the PlayStation community, representatives of Polyphony Digital have been meeting with the press and talking about the process of developing each part of the racer.

As we might expect, the team pays a great deal of attention to reproducing all the finer differences as accurately as possible and showing them on the track.

Kazunori Yamauchi referred to the issue of creating more cars, emphasizing that a model is always chosen that is a “design masterpiece” that has made its mark in automotive history.

Developing the most perfect car possible takes time – currently it takes about 270 days to create one vehicle from scratch for Gran Turismo 7.

Japanese not only obtain information from manufacturers, but gather data on interior photography, video footage, laser scanning, colorimetry and sound – the goal of the developers is not only to reproduce in detail the shape of the body, reflections of ambient light or textures, but to render the true sounds of the engine.

The workers involved in this procedure are located in three facilities located in Europe, North America and Japan, where real cars are delivered.

Of course, Yamauchi acknowledges the many requests from players who want to include different cars in Gran Turismo 7, but the whole complicated and painstaking process must take into account the “sources” that Polyphony Digital can use.

“Model production takes 3 days for ‘GT’ and ‘GT2,’ 30 days for ‘GT3’ and ‘GT4,’ 180 days for ‘GT5’ and ‘GT6’ and 270 days for ‘GT7’ production.”

The Japanese studio’s head admitted that the company is currently able to create about 60 new machines in 12 months, but this number does not reflect the actual state of Gran Turismo 7 – the racer has been expanded by just over 30 car models since its release in March 2022.
