The cast of the upcoming “Gladiator II” film gathered for the first major screening of the movie on Friday. Director Ridley Scott, though not present, received high praise from the cast during a question-and-answer session after the event.
The film stars Paul Mescal as Lucius Verus II, the son of a character from the original “Gladiator” movie. Mescal was impressed with how efficiently Scott was able to film complex scenes, such as the opening battle sequence which took only nine days to shoot. Actor Denzel Washington, who plays the role of Macrinus, said Scott was the primary reason he joined the project. Washington has worked with Scott before on “American Gangster” and praised his ability to recreate ancient Rome for the film.
Connie Nielsen is the only cast member returning from the original “Gladiator.” She noted that Scott has become even more efficient over the past 25 years. What used to take three hours to set up now only takes 20 minutes, despite the massive scale of the production involving thousands of extras.
The actors’ admiration for Scott was evident. Mescal called this film, which continues the story of his character from the first movie, “one of [Scott’s] finest pieces of work.” He said Scott was the only director who could do justice to the legacy of the original “Gladiator.” As the film prepares for its November 22 release date, it appears to carry not only the weight of expectations but also the respect of its cast for the enduring talents of its director.
