The gaming landscape is on the cusp of welcoming one of its most ambitious adaptations yet, as reports surface about Tencent’s efforts to bring the critically acclaimed open-world RPG, Elden Ring, to mobile platforms. This move signals a growing trend where major console and PC titles are transitioning to mobile formats, joining the ranks of other high-profile games that have made similar leaps.
Originally developed by FromSoftware and hailed as a masterpiece in 2022, Elden Ring could soon expand its horizons beyond the confines of traditional gaming platforms.
According to a detailed report by Reuters, with insights from three anonymous sources, Tencent Holdings has embarked on developing a mobile version of Elden Ring. The report indicates that Tencent, a conglomerate with a vast gaming empire, secured the licensing rights for Elden Ring in 2022 and has since initiated the project with a specialized development team.
Challenges and Expectations
The journey to adapt Elden Ring for mobile devices hasn’t been without its hurdles. The primary challenge stems from reconciling the game’s intricate design, which offers a complete, one-time purchase experience, with Tencent’s vision for a mobile version.
The proposed monetization strategy is said to mirror that of Genshin Impact, a free-to-play model that generates revenue through in-app purchases. This approach marks a significant shift from Elden Ring’s original sales model and has raised questions about how the game’s expansive and detailed world will translate to the mobile gaming ecosystem.
Tencent’s Strategic Moves
Tencent’s stature in the gaming industry is unparalleled, owning Riot Games and holding significant stakes in other major companies like Epic Games, Ubisoft, and Activision Blizzard. The attempt to mobilize Elden Ring underscores Tencent’s ambition to diversify and enrich its gaming portfolio further.
However, this endeavor comes at a time when Tencent is reportedly facing challenges in capturing the next big hit in the gaming market. The recent cancellation of a mobile game based on the NieR franchise in December 2023 has spotlighted the company’s quest for a successful new venture.
The revelation of Tencent’s struggle to match its competitors’ pace in releasing new and engaging products was candidly expressed by CEO Pony Ma in a speech at the end of January. Ma’s remarks reflect a period of introspection for Tencent, as it seeks to reclaim its innovative edge and deliver a groundbreaking mobile gaming experience with Elden Ring.
