Filmmaker Zack Snyder is working to overcome obstacles facing two of his major Netflix projects. Snyder’s zombie thriller “Army of the Dead” was expected to spawn a connected film and television franchise known as the “Army-verse.” However, Netflix has reportedly canceled future installments of this planned universe.
At the same time, Snyder’s science fiction epic “Rebel Moon” has received a lukewarm reception from critics and audiences since its debut. Even extended cuts aimed at addressing initial concerns failed to significantly improve views or generate buzz on the level hoped for.
Despite these setbacks, Snyder remains committed to merging the stories and mythology of these franchises. He has proposed connecting them through an “interdimensional” link that could allow crossover between the universes. However, blending the distinct Near-Future and Distant Future settings brings narrative challenges.
To address this, Snyder theorized that the zombie virus from “Army of the Dead” might originate on a planet within the “Rebel Moon” world. He hopes this shared universe concept could revive interest in both properties by incorporating elements of one into future films of the other.
However, the streaming service has not officially greenlit any additional “Rebel Moon” films. With a mixed response so far, the long-term future of this franchise remains uncertain. As Snyder works to realize his vision, all eyes are on whether he can craft a cohesive story that Engages audiences and convinces Netflix to support further exploration of this united science fiction and horror universe. The outcome may influence Snyder’s relationship with Netflix moving forward.
