Emmy-nominated actress Anya Taylor-Joy has said she is eager to take on the role of Elsa in a possible live-action adaptation of Disney’s hit animated movie “Frozen.” In a recent interview, Taylor-Joy said portraying the ice queen would allow her to show off magical abilities on screen. She also believes the singing, dancing, and acting demands of the role are challenges she is ready to take on.
Known for her breakout performances in “The Queen’s Gambit” and the upcoming film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Taylor-Joy sees potential in playing Elsa. “It would be very fun to shoot ice out of your hand,” she explained to Vogue Hong Kong. As the eldest sister to several young nieces and nephews, Taylor-Joy thinks being Elsa in a live-action film would thrill her family. “I would love for them to be able to say ‘my auntie is Elsa,'” she remarked.
Beyond Elsa’s powers, Taylor-Joy is drawn to the musical performance requirements. With a background in ballet, she described taking on Elsa as “an impossible mountain to climb” that would require skills in acting, singing, and dancing simultaneously. This multi-talented aspect appeals to Taylor-Joy’s love of difficult work. Her dance training has also enhanced her acting abilities, preparing her for physically demanding roles like in “Furiosa.”
While not officially announced, Disney has found success adapting animated classics like “Cinderella,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “The Little Mermaid” into live-action films. Recent box office totals suggest “Frozen” could translate well to this format. Based on “The Snow Queen,” the original 2013 movie became a global sensation, as did its sequel. Disney has confirmed new installments, “Frozen 3” and “Frozen 4,” are in development as well.
As Disney explores new ways to reach audiences, Taylor-Joy’s enthusiasm and skills make her a good fit for the iconic role of Elsa, should a live-action “Frozen” film move forward. For now, fans can only imagine seeing Taylor-Joy embody the character on screen, from wearing Elsa’s gown to performing her signature song. Whether this potential casting becomes reality remains to be seen.
