In a substantial update to the recently released co-op shooter Helldivers 2, developer Arrowhead Game Studios has raised the level cap to 150, introduced new environmental hazards, and implemented a wide array of balance adjustments across weapons, missions, armor effectiveness and more.
The patch notes detailing the changes make one thing clear – Arrowhead is not resting on its laurels when it comes to continually refining and rebalancing the challenging yet addictive Helldivers 2 experience.
Headlining the update is a significant increase to the maximum player level, tripling the previous cap from 50 all the way up to 150 to allow for further progression. Players will also now face new planetary hazards in the form of blizzards and sandstorms adding another layer of environmental obstacles to overcome.
On the mission front, adjustments were made to strike a better balance between difficulty and objectives. The “Retrieve Essential Personnel” operation has had enemy spawn points repositioned further from the defense locations to give players more breathing room. Higher difficulty levels will also require fewer civilian rescues.
Conversely, the “Destroy Command Bunkers” mission has been ramped up with more objective points and the ability to appear in higher difficulty operations starting at level 5 to compensate for being “too easy before compared to other missions.”
Weapons saw a major rebalancing across primary, secondary and support armaments. While some like the Anti-Materiel Rifle (30% damage increase), Breaker Incendiary (boosted bullet damage) and Dominator (increased damage/stagger) received buffs, the powerful Slugger wasnerfed with reduced stagger, damage output and demolition force.
The patch also adjusted various operation modifiers, halving the negative impacts of increased stratagem cooldowns to provide some relief during intense combat scenarios.
Survivability was another focal point, with heavy and medium armor now providing 10% and 5% damage reduction respectively. However, the intimidating Bile Titan enemy was adjusted to be unstunnable, maintaining its lethal presence.
While the update brings a host of positive changes, some new issues have arisen that Arrowhead is already working to address, such as rare crashes when picking up snowballs and grenade throwbacks not functioning properly.
Overall, the latest Helldivers 2 patch demonstrates Arrowhead’s commitment to evolving the game’s challenging but rewarding gameplay loop through an active cycle of buffs, nerfs and system adjustments based on player data and feedback. The raised level cap and new environmental obstacles point towards the developer having plenty more content and challenges in store for its cult hit franchise.
