Actress Marisa Abela has experienced growing success over the past few years, thanks in large part to her breakout role on the hit HBO series “Industry” and her acclaimed performance as Amy Winehouse in the biopic “Back to Black.” In a recent interview, Abela opened up about her experiences on both projects and where her career is headed next.

Abela plays Yasmin Kara-Hanani, a privileged yet vulnerable young banker, on “Industry.” Now in its third season, the show details the intense competition between graduates vying for slots at a top London investment bank. Abela remarked that her character and the overall scope of the show’s storytelling has expanded significantly as the series has progressed. “As [Yasmin] has gotten stronger in asserting herself, there are parts of me that have done the same,” she noted.

The actress also spent months in extensive preparation to portray the late singer Amy Winehouse in “Back to Black.” Abela emphasized the physical and emotional toll of such an intense role but expressed pride in honoring Winehouse’s legacy. “I firmly believe that self-consciousness is the enemy of actors,” she said of shutting out outside criticism during filming. Her performance was met with critical acclaim.

Additionally, Abela’s star power has skyrocketed alongside her Industry co-stars Myha’la Herrold and Harry Lawtey. She warmly described their bond through sharing this unique experience. Looking ahead, Abela is slated to appear in Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming spy film “Black Bag” alongside major talents like Cate Blanchett. She reflected on having more choice in her career at this stage.

Thanks to her starring roles, Abela’s celebrity status continues rising in both television and film. With “Industry’s” enduring popularity and additional high-profile projects on the horizon, her career trajectory remains pointed upward.
