Strong hints suggest a new Borderlands game is secretly in development at Gearbox Software. In a recent interview about the franchise’s upcoming film adaptation, studio CEO Randy Pitchford gave a telling non-denial when asked about his favorite series entry.
Though he avoided directly acknowledging Borderlands 4, Pitchford proclaimed “we’re working on something” that is Gearbox’s “greatest” project yet. He said an announcement will come “when the time is right,” but his effusive praise indicates a major new installment is indeed underway.

Pitchford’s caginess aligns with studios’ typical secrecy around major sequels pre-reveal. But his language leaves little room for doubt. Given Borderlands’ crown jewel status within Gearbox’s portfolio, any claims of the studio’s “greatest” achievement surely point to another mainline chapter.
The interview also comes amidst fans already speculating Borderlands 4 may emerge around the film’s release to capitalize on the heightened mainstream buzz. Ominous recap videos of past games shared on Borderlands’ social media have further fueled anticipation.

Though concrete details remain scarce, Reddit users analyzed the marketing patterns to predict a potential Borderlands 4 debut at PAX East this March. The series’ last main sequel was revealed there in 2019.
An eventual reveal feels imminent with the film arriving this summer. As Pitchford says, “the time is not yet” but all signs suggest Gearbox is primed to pull back the curtain on another epic gun-toting adventure across the border planets soon.
For franchise devotees, the prospect of exploring new worlds and looting more exotic armaments promises a thrilling next chapter. Whatever form it takes, Borderlands 4 already sounds like Gearbox’s boldest vision yet.
