Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind – A Retro Rewind of Ranger Mayhem

The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers are going retro in an all-new video game that remixes the franchise’s classic lore and universe with beloved 16-bit gameplay styles. Titled “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind“, the game comes from the retro masters at Digital Eclipse.

While only confirmed for PC so far, the game is highly likely to also morph onto PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles given the systems’ popularity. Developer comments suggest other unannounced console ports are planned too.

At its core, Rita’s Rewind is a side-scrolling beat-’em-up in the vein of classic 16-bit brawlers, letting players team up as the iconic Power Rangers to punch and kick through waves of famous franchise enemies. However, the game constantly shapeshifts genres, incorporating scrolling shooter levels reminiscent of the classic Space Harrier.

“We’re blending the simple joy of those beloved childhood gameplay styles with an all-new, remixed Power Rangers narrative,” said Director Brett Mulvey. “Fans will be transported back to the 16-bit era with a unique twist on the lore they know and love.”

The story finds the rangers’ nemesis Rita Repulsa teaming up with a robotic, time-traveling future version of herself. Their nefarious plan? Rewrite history to prevent the Power Rangers from ever being formed by altering events from the past.

Players must guide the teenage heroes through this remixed timeline, battling iconic monsters and villains from throughout Power Rangers history. The team’s ability to “morph” between Rangers mid-game will also be vital.

While the vibrant pixel art visuals authentically channel the 16-bit retro era, the animated story cutscenes have drawn criticism for their subpar quality and clashing with the in-game art style. Nevertheless, if the frenetic core gameplay captures that classic Power Rangers spirit, fans may be willing to forgive some rough edges.

After its success with retro collections like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Cowabunga Collection, Digital Eclipse has quickly become the modern maestro of reviving beloved ’80s and ’90s franchises in fun, nostalgic ways. Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind looks set to continue that streak when it arrives later in 2024.

For many adults who grew up idolizing the Power Rangers, getting to relive that childhood fantasy through an all-new retro adventure could be a dream come true. After over 25 years, it’s still morphin’ time!
