Brian Cox has come forward to back actor Kevin Spacey amid an ongoing debate over the fallout from serious allegations of sexual misconduct. In an interview with The i Paper, Cox, a long-time friend of Spacey, expressed his dismay over what he described as an overly harsh industry response.
“Kevin is an old friend of mine. All right, Kevin did certain things… He also did a lot of extraordinary work. And I find that really petty, and I just don’t like it. It’s sneaky and petty and not right,” Cox stated. He added that while Spacey’s personal life may have been marked by missteps, he never witnessed the actor engaging in abusive behavior.
Since accusations emerged in 2017, multiple legal cases have been brought against Spacey. A New York jury found him not liable in a case involving actor Anthony Rapp, and a U.K. court cleared him of several charges in 2023. A recent documentary, Spacey Unmasked, featured new testimonies alleging inappropriate behavior during the filming of a popular television series.
Industry veterans have also weighed in on Spacey’s situation. Actress Sharon Stone praised his influence on emerging talent, while actor Liam Neeson highlighted Spacey’s sensitivity and humor, insisting that the industry misses his presence on screen.
Spacey himself has voiced his frustration with the current state of affairs. In a conversation with Piers Morgan, he mentioned financial pressures, including the foreclosure of his Baltimore home, and criticized the lack of professional opportunities available to him following the allegations. His remarks have stirred further debate about the balance between accountability and redemption in Hollywood.
Cox’s comments arrive as some in the film community question whether current practices unfairly penalize individuals, sparking discussions about the future direction of the industry.
