Universal has shifted DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 5 from December 23, 2026 to June 30, 2027, placing the film in the Independence Day corridor and moving an untitled Illumination title up to April 16, 2027. The change steers the ogre’s return away from the crowded Christmas frame that includes Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, and into a June lineup that also features Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and a new Pixar original.
The new installment reunites Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz, with Zendaya voicing Felicia, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona. Veteran franchise hands Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are directing, with Brad Ableson as co-director; producing duties are handled by Gina Shay alongside Illumination chief Chris Meledandri.
This marks the second date change in recent months for the long-anticipated sequel, which was previously moved from July 1, 2026 to December 23, 2026. The six-month push to June 30, 2027 aligns the release with peak family attendance and the extended holiday weekend.
Activity on the project has continued behind the scenes. Murphy said voice work on Shrek 5 has been underway and that a Donkey-focused spinoff is next up, with recording targeted to begin in the fall. His comments suggest DreamWorks is sequencing two pieces of Far Far Away storytelling while finalizing the mainline sequel.
The calendar maneuver also reflects a broader reshuffle across major studios as tentpoles vie for prime dates. By vacating Christmas 2026, Shrek 5 sidesteps a direct head-to-head with a marquee superhero release and joins a summer animated cluster that could prompt further schedule moves from competitors as the 2027 slate firms up.
