Tramell Tillman made Emmy history on September 14 by winning outstanding supporting actor in a drama series for his performance as Seth Milchick on Apple TV+’s Severance, becoming the first Black actor to receive the award in the category across the Television Academy’s seven-decade timeline.
At the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Tillman accepted the trophy with a brief, personal nod to the person he credits as his first acting coach, his mother, a sentiment he has voiced throughout awards season and echoed onstage.
The category was among the night’s most competitive, pitting Tillman against his Severance castmates Zach Cherry and John Turturro, three nominees from The White Lotus — Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs and Sam Rockwell — and James Marsden for Paradise. The win capped a strong evening for Severance, which also claimed lead actress for Britt Lower.
Tillman’s portrayal of Milchick, the tightly wound supervisor at Lumon Industries, drew attention through season two’s late episodes, including a finale sequence that underlined the character’s authority and unnerving charm. His recognition also closes a long-standing gap in Emmy history for this specific field, a milestone many observers had tracked as nominations were announced earlier in the summer.
