The American Black Film Festival Honors handed its 2026 awards-season tributes to filmmaker Ryan Coogler and the creative team behind Sinners, alongside honors for Dwayne Johnson and Angela Bassett, during a Feb. 16 dinner in Beverly Hills.
Organizers said they built the night to spotlight careers and current momentum rather than hand out competitive trophies. The event, presented by NICE CROWD, took place at the SLS Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Beverly Hills and was hosted by KevOnStage.
Bassett received the Excellence in the Arts Award, with ABFF leaders Jeff and Nicole Friday calling her “the embodiment of excellence” and praising performances they described as “fearless, powerful, and deeply human.” Johnson accepted the Entertainment Icon Award as the gala leaned into its usual mix of celebration and industry messaging: Black artists still face uneven access to financing, decision-makers, and sustained marketing muscle, even as their projects drive audience attention and revenue.
The program also honored Jennifer Hudson with the Renaissance Award, Damson Idris with the Horizon Award, and Salli Richardson-Whitfield with the Evolution Award. Coogler’s tribute centered on collaboration: the filmmakers Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian joined him in receiving the night’s special recognition for Sinners. In remarks reported from the room, Coogler framed the moment with a pointed line: “Our stories are not trends, they’re truths.”
A presenter lineup underlined how closely the gala tracks the mainstream awards corridor. Jerry Bruckheimer introduced Idris’ honor, praising the actor as a rising force as Idris adds higher-profile studio work to the résumé he built on prestige television.
