Anne Hathaway Says "Princess Diaries 3" Is Next — But Disney Hasn't Said Yes Yet

Anne Hathaway confirmed this week that “The Princess Diaries 3” remains firmly in development, describing the project as something her team is actively pursuing — even as Disney has yet to greenlight the film. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly alongside her “Devil Wears Prada 2” co-star Meryl Streep, Hathaway said her camp is “constantly working on it” and that the intention is to make the sequel “next” once she clears her current slate of commitments.

The admission came paired with a candid explanation for why cameras haven’t rolled yet. Hathaway said the “Devil Wears Prada” sequel “cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space,” and that filming it across the summer of 2025 made it “impossible to focus on both at the same time.” She stressed the project “is not greenlit or confirmed yet” by Disney, while her team continues working on the script.

The timing challenge is considerable. Hathaway’s schedule for 2026 includes “Mother Mary,” “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” “Flowervale Street,” and “Verity” — a lineup that leaves little room for a production requiring the coordination of returning cast members and international locations.

On the same weekend, author Meg Cabot offered her own update at BookCon in New York, and it was notably more specific. Cabot confirmed a castle in Toronto has already been rented and is “sitting there waiting,” suggesting the logistical groundwork is further along than the official development status implies. Cabot also revealed she has already read the script, adding that the story calls for a broad reunion of the original cast. “There is a part for everybody, because there’s a thing that happens where everyone has to show up,” she said, naming Robert Schwartzman and Chris Pine as participants — adding of Pine, “Although he says he’s not, but he is.”

Pine’s involvement remains the subject of familiar ambiguity; the actor has previously told fans to “call Bob Iger” when asked about the sequel. The question of Julie Andrews, who played Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the first two films, looms larger. Andrews has not yet confirmed her involvement, and has previously expressed doubt that another installment would happen.

The original 2001 film grossed $165 million at the box office and served as Hathaway’s breakout role. A sequel followed in 2004, and plans for a third installment circulated as far back as 2016, when director Garry Marshall’s death ended early discussions. Disney officially confirmed the project was in development in 2022. Adele Lim is attached to direct, with Flora Greeson writing the screenplay and Debra Martin Chase producing.

Hathaway told Entertainment Weekly the production pressure is real: the film will have to “knock it out of the park” given how long fans have waited.
