“Avatar: Seven Havens” Splits Fans With Anime-Inspired Look and Slimmer Animation

Critics praise the writing and score of Paramount+’s latest Avatar sequel while disagreeing over its stripped-down animation, even as the studio orders more seasons.

“Avatar: Seven Havens” has divided fans over the element of the franchise that once seemed least likely to cause an argument: how it looks. Paramount+ premiered Book One, “Survival,” on October 9 with three episodes and has released a new batch every Friday since.

The 13-episode season ends October 30. The series takes place 225 years after “The Legend of Korra,” in a world broken by a cataclysm. Pavi, a young Earthbender, becomes the new Avatar, a title that brands her as humanity’s destroyer. She and her long-lost twin, Nisha, face hunters from both the human and spirit worlds.

Co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko deliberately moved away from the look of the earlier shows. They cite French artist Mœbius and 1990s anime among their influences, and the series leans toward a cleaner, older style of Japanese animation. IndieWire’s critic compares the tone to “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” rather than to the softer Ghibli references that fit the original series. The critic also notes a broken stained-glass quality to the landscape beyond the haven of Ellora.

Reviewers largely agree on the writing, characters and score, but they split on motion. One review called the animation “inconsistent” and the action hard to follow. Another welcomed the series as a return to form after the franchise’s live-action and film detours. Some fans point out that the show animates on threes, with a new drawing every third frame, and read that as a step down from earlier seasons. Others treat it as a deliberate aesthetic choice.

Paramount appears unbothered. The studio announced at New York Comic-Con that Books 3 and 4 are in the works, and it has ordered a separate series, “Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos.” Executive producer Ethan Spaulding has described “Seven Havens” as the most serialized show the franchise has produced. He has compared the challenge of designing the seven titular havens to making seven different series.

The release itself came early. Paramount originally planned a 2027 debut before moving it up to October.
