Jeremy Renner says he is not in “Avengers: Doomsday,” and he predicts Earth’s mightiest heroes will lose without him. Asked at a Q&A at Comic Con Liverpool whether he would return for the film, Renner said firmly that he is not in it. “They didn’t call me, so it’s their fault,” he said, adding that the Avengers will “probably lose.” An audience member shouted “again,” and the crowd laughed. The clip resurfaced online and drew hundreds of thousands of views.
Renner delivered the line as a joke, but its content is plain. When Marvel revealed the film’s cast at its chair-reveal event, many returning heroes were named and Renner was not among them. Outlets treat his prediction as a gag, not a spoiler. Marvel has not commented.
The omission leaves a gap. Renner played Clint Barton across four “Avengers” films and the “Hawkeye” series, which paired him with Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop. “Doomsday” is assembling nearly 60 heroes to fight Doctor Doom. The film arrives Dec. 18.
Renner has long said he would come back. In 2025 he said he was open to returning to the franchise, and he expected a second season of “Hawkeye” and other projects. At Comic Con Liverpool, host Charlamagne tha God suggested Marvel could simply bring in a Hawkeye variant from another universe, and Renner laughed and told them to go ahead.
Fans are unsure. Many did not take the actor seriously because of his humorous delivery. No official confirmation exists that Renner will appear, though his own statement says he will not. He also said he was excited about the re-release of “Avengers: Endgame” in theaters ahead of “Doomsday.”
