Warner Bros. has acquired a spec feature titled With the 8th Pick that dramatizes the behind-the-scenes maneuvering around Kobe Bryant’s 1996 NBA draft night, centering on the New Jersey Nets’ front office and newly hired coach John Calipari as they weighed selecting the Lower Merion standout with the eighth pick.

The screenplay is by Alex Sohn and Gavin Johannsen, with producing duties handled by Tim and Trevor White of Star Thrower Entertainment and Religion of Sports executives Ryan Stowell and Gotham Chopra; no director is attached. The project was confirmed by TheWrap.

The title nods to a pivotal fork in draft history. The Nets held pick No. 8 and seriously evaluated Bryant, but opted for Villanova guard Kerry Kittles after Bryant’s camp signaled he preferred Los Angeles, including the threat that he might play in Italy rather than report to New Jersey. Accounts from team officials and reporters have long detailed the pressure surrounding that decision and how it steered the teenager away from the Nets.

Bryant entered the league two selections later as the No. 13 pick by Charlotte, then was traded to the Lakers for center Vlade Divac in a prearranged deal that reshaped both franchises. League retrospectives and team records affirm the timing and terms, underscoring how the Hornets-to-Lakers pathway came together only after draft night.

Positioned as a character-driven, high-stakes draft thriller, With the 8th Pick is described in industry reporting as blending elements of tech-world procedurals and recent sports negotiation dramas, with the Nets’ pursuit of Bryant as its narrative spine. The film tracks executives John Nash and Calipari navigating workouts, agent dynamics, and internal risk calculations that could have redirected Bryant’s career before it began. Casting, production timetable, and release plans have not been announced.
