Phia Saban Explains Helaena’s Fatal Choice in ‘House of the Dragon’ Finale

Phia Saban tells how a Bernard Shaw play helped shape Helaena's final, defiant stand against Rhaenyra in the Season 3 finale.

“House of the Dragon” closed its third season by killing off the character many viewers considered its emotional anchor, with Queen Helaena Targaryen taking her own life in Sunday’s finale. Actress Phia Saban told TheWrap the character’s decision came from a sense of freedom rather than despair, describing a scene built around defiance rather than surrender.

Saban said the choice reflects Helaena’s ability to see with painful clarity how her life and her unborn child’s life would unfold, calling it an attempt to seize the last freedom available to her. Before the character jumps from her window at the Red Keep, she confronts Rhaenyra, who had been keeping her confined out of fear she would give birth to a son who could threaten her claim to the throne. Helaena tells Rhaenyra that living is not the same as avoiding death, arguing that being kept alive as a political pawn amounted to a kind of death itself.

Saban said that confrontation grew out of a conversation with showrunner Ryan Condal and writer Sara Hess, in which she pointed to a speech from George Bernard Shaw’s play “Saint Joan” as inspiration — a moment where Joan tells her captors that true life comes from hearing church bells, lambs and wind, not merely drawing breath. Saban said she felt that idea captured Helaena’s arc, arguing that once her sense of purpose was stripped away, she had effectively already been killed.

The finale departs from George R.R. Martin’s source novel “Fire & Blood,” in which grief over her son Maelor’s murder drives Helaena to her death. The show cut Maelor from the cast entirely, a change Martin criticized in advance, arguing the series lacked a fresh enough horror to justify having Helaena kill herself. Saban acknowledged the altered circumstances but said she still sees a clear catalyst in the finished episode.

Critics have been divided on how well the altered version lands. Forbes critic Erik Kain called the episode largely satisfying while maintaining reservations about how the series has handled Rhaenyra’s storyline, and other reviewers pointed to strained character dynamics as a recurring weakness this season. Even so, the season has generally been viewed as an improvement over its predecessor. “House of the Dragon” has already been renewed for a fourth season, which will serve as the show’s final chapter, with a premiere not expected until 2028.
