Josh Hartnett was briefly hospitalized after a late-night car crash in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where he has been filming an untitled Netflix series, authorities and a representative confirmed. The incident occurred just before 1 a.m. on September 25, when the SUV in which the 47-year-old actor was a passenger collided with a patrol vehicle from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

Hartnett was treated and released and has been cleared to return to work, according to his team. Police said the SUV was driven by a 59-year-old man; the officer in the patrol car was also taken to the hospital as a precaution. Investigators have asked the public for witnesses or dashcam footage as they continue their inquiry.

The production, announced this month, centers on a fisherman confronting a mysterious threat in his coastal hometown and features a cast that includes Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton. Filming has drawn the project to locations in and around St. John’s, placing Hartnett on a demanding schedule that has kept him in the province through early fall. His release from the hospital means the series can maintain momentum while officials determine the factors that led to the crash.

Law enforcement have not publicly identified the drivers involved beyond age and role, nor have they detailed potential citations or charges pending the investigation’s outcome. The crash left both vehicles significantly damaged, according to multiple accounts, but current indications point to minor injuries for those involved. Local outlets reported the collision in the early hours of Thursday morning, with follow-up statements emphasizing that the inquiry remains active and that additional information would be shared if available.

Hartnett’s recent run has included a supporting turn in a Best Picture winner and a buzzy TV appearance, marking a sustained resurgence after years of lower-profile work. The accident drew swift attention due to his ongoing shoot and the involvement of a police vehicle, but with the actor discharged and back on set, focus now shifts to completing the series while investigators piece together a timeline from witness statements and any recovered video.
