Apple TV+ launched Season 2 of “The Last Thing He Told Me” on Friday, Feb. 20, pushing Jennifer Garner’s Hannah Hall back into motion with an opening episode built around a close-quarters fight and a story engine that was still being written as cameras rolled.
In an interview with TheWrap, Garner said the premiere’s brawl paired her again with a stunt performer she previously worked with on “The Kingdom,” recalling that their earlier fight choreography got so intense she “bit off part of his ear.” She described meeting him again for Season 2 as a familiar, fast-moving reset that startled crew members who had not worked with her before. Co-star Judy Greer said she could hear the commotion from her costume trailer as the set reacted in real time.
The season jumps five years after the first run, catching Hannah and stepdaughter Bailey (Angourie Rice) living in Los Angeles when Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) reappears and forces them to run again. TheWrap reported that the production moved ahead with limited source material at first: executive producer Lauren Neustadter said the team began with the first 100 pages of Laura Dave’s sequel-in-progress and built the series alongside the book’s development, a process she compared to a “trust fall.”
Apple’s promotional material frames the new episodes as a race to reunite the family before the past catches them, with eight episodes rolling out weekly through April 10. New cast additions include Greer, Rita Wilson, John Noble and Luke Kirby, expanding the show’s criminal-family pressure point while keeping the focus on Hannah and Bailey’s alliance.
Early reaction has split along familiar lines for glossy, fast-plot thrillers: some critics have praised the season’s sharper momentum and higher physical stakes, while others argue the follow-up leans too hard on coincidence and escalation. Either way, Apple is treating the return as a flagship moment, pairing the premiere with a coordinated press push and a book tie-in event earlier this month in Los Angeles.
