Matthew Lillard says Quentin Tarantino’s public swipe at his acting still stings, even as a wave of support from filmmakers and fans has turned the episode into a broader debate about how powerful directors talk about actors in public.
In interviews published Tuesday, Lillard described the fallout from Tarantino’s December podcast remarks as surreal, comparing the praise he received afterward to “living through your own wake” and saying it felt like watching people post tributes while he was still here. He said the criticism “sucked,” and repeated that it landed hard because he has long admired Tarantino’s work and would have liked to collaborate with him.
The dispute traces back to Tarantino’s appearance on Bret Easton Ellis’ podcast in December 2025, where he sharply criticized Paul Dano’s performance in There Will Be Blood and then added that he did not care for Owen Wilson or Lillard. Tarantino framed the Dano remarks while discussing his ranking of the century’s best films, arguing Paul Thomas Anderson’s drama would place higher on his list with a different supporting performance.
Lillard first answered at GalaxyCon in Columbus, Ohio, where he told fans that Tarantino’s comment hurt his feelings and pointed to what he called a double standard in Hollywood, saying such blunt criticism is rarely aimed at top-tier stars.
Since then, the story has widened beyond Lillard. Matt Reeves publicly praised Dano, and Daniel Day-Lewis’ representatives told reporters that Day-Lewis endorsed a fan-posted statement calling Dano one of the best actors of his generation, while clarifying that the Instagram account itself was not his.
George Clooney later added a pointed rebuke at the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards, saying he would be “honoured” to work with Dano, Wilson and Lillard and warning against adding “cruelty” to public discourse. Lillard has since said support from Clooney, James Gunn and Mike Flanagan helped reframe the moment, even as he maintains the original remarks were painful. Owen Wilson has not publicly responded.
