Prime Video has confirmed four new series regulars for the second season of “Young Sherlock,” bringing Olivia Williams, Indira Varma, Sophie Skelton and Aidan Gillen into the mystery drama as production continues in London. The streamer did not disclose which characters the actors will play, leaving fans to guess how their roles will fit into the world built around a teenage version of literature’s most famous detective.
Williams, recently seen in “Dune: Prophecy” and “Monster: The Ed Gein Story,” joins alongside her “Dune: Prophecy” co-star Varma, whose credits include “The Night Manager” and “Game of Thrones.” Skelton arrives after eight seasons on “Outlander,” and Gillen, another “Game of Thrones” veteran, adds a fourth genre-heavy name to a cast the streamer is clearly building around name recognition. They join returning stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the young Holmes, Dónal Finn as his rival James Moriarty, and Natascha McElhone, Max Irons and Holly Cattle as members of the Holmes family.
The additions come with a departure. Zine Tseng, who played Season 1 female lead Xiao Wei, will not return, though her character’s arc closed out cleanly in the finale and she had hinted in interviews that a comeback was possible. Guy Ritchie, who developed the series with Peter Harness and executive produces alongside showrunner Matthew Parkhill, returns to direct the season’s opening episode.
The casting news follows a strong first outing for the series, which premiered its eight episodes to roughly 45 million viewers within its opening month, according to figures cited by Prime Video. That performance appears to be shaping the streamer’s approach to Season 2, with the expanded ensemble signaling a bigger creative and financial commitment to the franchise.
Production on the new season began in late May, and Prime Video has already released behind-the-scenes footage confirming filming is underway. No premiere date has been set. “Young Sherlock” reimagines Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective as a teenager still developing the deductive skills that will define his later career, blending mystery plotting with the stylized action sensibility Ritchie has used across his film career.
