Dave Bautista has officially closed a deal to play Kratos in Amazon and Sony’s long-gestating “God of War” television adaptation, stepping into a role that opened up after original star Ryan Hurst tore his bicep during a stunt in late June. The injury occurred four months into production in Vancouver, forcing Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television to weigh the cost of waiting for Hurst’s recovery against the risk of pushing the series into 2027.
Hurst’s rehabilitation timeline made continuing with him impractical, and executives at both studios decided within weeks to recast the part rather than delay further. Bautista, known for playing Drax in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” films and for recent roles in “Dune: Part Two” and “Glass Onion,” emerged as the studios’ choice given his background as a professional wrestler and his physical conditioning from an upcoming “Highlander” role. Production is expected to resume in Vancouver this fall, with Hurst’s previously filmed scenes requiring reshoots.
The series adapts the 2018 “God of War” game and its 2022 sequel, “Ragnarök,” following Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey through Norse mythology to honor Kratos’ late wife. Callum Vinson remains attached to play Atreus despite earlier speculation that he might also be replaced. Ronald D. Moore, known for “Battlestar Galactica” and “For All Mankind,” serves as showrunner, having joined the project in 2024 after the departure of original writers Rafe Judkins, Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus following creative disagreements with the studios.
The production has faced scrutiny since Amazon released a first-look image of Hurst as Kratos in February, which drew criticism online for straying from the character’s muscular game design. That reaction shifted somewhat after Hurst later posted photos showing a more physically transformed appearance, prompting some fans to argue he should have kept the role. The show carries a two-season order, with both seasons expected to film consecutively. Given the delays, the series is unlikely to reach Amazon’s platform before the 2027 holiday season.
