Sorkin Says Eisenberg’s Refusal to Return as Zuckerberg Never Crossed His Mind

The director says a studio offer failed to tempt his former star, and Jeremy Strong takes over the role as the film opens Oct. 9.

Aaron Sorkin says he never imagined Jesse Eisenberg would turn down the chance to play Mark Zuckerberg again, and the refusal still stings days before “The Social Reckoning” reaches theaters.

Sorkin told Entertainment Weekly he was a couple of pages from finishing the script when he ran into Eisenberg and said a draft was coming. The actor smiled and nodded. “It never occurred to me that he wouldn’t wanna do it,” Sorkin said.

Sorkin spent a three-day weekend trying to talk Eisenberg into returning before he cast Jeremy Strong as Zuckerberg last September. Eisenberg did not sign on, but he told Sorkin the conversations brought him closer to changing his mind than he expected. Sorkin said that pleased him.

Money did not move him. Sorkin suggested the studio put a sizable offer on the table. “If anything, money is a disincentive for him,” Sorkin said, calling it admirable and saying Eisenberg worries about raising his children with too much wealth.

In an earlier Vanity Fair interview, Sorkin gave another reason: Eisenberg no longer wanted to be conflated with Zuckerberg and has his problems with the man. Both explanations come from Sorkin. Eisenberg has not laid out his reasoning at length in the coverage reviewed.

Eisenberg had signaled openness years ago. In July 2019 he said that if Sorkin chose to write a sequel, he would “obviously be interested.” The project entered development in June 2025, and its title changed to “The Social Reckoning” that September.

The original film set a high bar. “The Social Network” earned eight Oscar nominations and won three, including best adapted screenplay for Sorkin. Eisenberg received a nomination for his performance. David Fincher directed that film. Sorkin now directs the follow-up himself.

Strong leads a cast that includes Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Billy Magnussen and Bill Burr. The film also tackles the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol without mentioning Donald Trump, a choice Sorkin has defended.

Eisenberg’s absence has become the story around the movie. Sorkin has not hidden his frustration, and he has not blamed his former star for it either. “The Social Reckoning” opens Oct. 9, and audiences will decide whether another actor can carry the character Eisenberg made famous.
