Inde Navarrette says she is throwing everything she has at Rogue, the Marvel mutant she will play in the studio’s upcoming “X-Men” reboot.
“I’m doing everything humanly possible because I love that character,” the 25-year-old actor told the Los Angeles Times. Navarrette said she has studied Rogue closely and wants to honor the expectations of director Jake Schreier, the filmmakers’ vision and her own as a lifelong fan. She closed the thought by repeating that she is “doing everything,” with exclamation-point emphasis.
Disney named Navarrette as Rogue at its D23 fan event in August. The announcement followed her breakout in the horror film “Obsession,” which has drawn awards attention from Focus Features this fall. Marvel has not moved quickly on the X-Men project. Wikipedia lists the film for 2028, and the studio has not confirmed a title.
Schreier, who directed “Thunderbolts*,” leads the production. The cast around Navarrette skews young and fresh. Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey, a role she picked up after her appearance in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Kit Connor takes Cyclops, Maya Boyd plays Storm and Asa German plays Angel. Christopher Abbott, Samara Weaving and Adam Driver have also joined the ensemble, though their roles have not been detailed in the coverage reviewed.
Navarrette steps into a part with a clear screen history. Anna Paquin played Rogue in “X-Men,” “X2,” “X-Men: The Last Stand” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” and no other actor has held the role on film. Fans will measure Navarrette against that performance. Paquin’s version gave the character a wounded, guarded quality that defined her for a generation of moviegoers.
The character carries deep comics lineage. Rogue debuted in 1981 in “The Avengers Annual” #10. She absorbs the powers and memories of anyone she touches, and she has flight, super strength and durability. Her fans know her as a mutant who cannot hold another person’s hand without hurting them, which gives her stories an emotional weight that few superhero arcs match.
Navarrette has not discussed specific scenes or story choices. For now she is offering reassurance, and Marvel is leaving the details for later.
