Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty Expansion Hits 5 Million Sales Milestone

CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, after its initial turbulent release, has witnessed a remarkable turnaround, thanks largely to the Phantom Liberty expansion. This addition to the game has not only revitalized interest but also significantly boosted its sales, with over five million gamers venturing into the game’s dynamic district of Dogtown.

Since its release, the Phantom Liberty expansion has captivated players with its intriguing plot involving the NUSA President, challenging encounters like the Chimera, and exhilarating gameplay elements such as rocket-based parkour. This expansion, coupled with the comprehensive 2.0 update of the game, has successfully reinvigorated the Cyberpunk 2077 experience, as evidenced by the impressive sales figures.

In a celebratory tweet, CD Projekt Red, also known for the acclaimed Witcher series, announced that more than 5 million agents have infiltrated Dogtown, highlighting the expansion’s remarkable appeal. This achievement is particularly noteworthy when considering the base version of Cyberpunk 2077 had surpassed 25 million copies sold just under three years after its release, a milestone it reached faster than The Witcher 3.

Phantom Liberty’s impact was immediate and substantial, with sales reaching 3 million units in just the first week following its launch on September 26, 2023. Since then, the game has continued to attract both returning players and newcomers to Night City, indicating a sustained and growing interest in the game’s expanded universe.

Continued Updates and Improvements Keep Players Engaged

The success of Phantom Liberty can also be attributed to CD Projekt Red’s commitment to enhancing the Cyberpunk 2077 experience post-expansion. The continuous updates and patches have significantly improved the game’s performance and added new features.

A notable example is the free 2.1 update, which introduced a fully functional metro system, allowing players to traverse Night City in a more immersive and realistic manner. These ongoing improvements have been instrumental in maintaining player engagement and contributing to the expansion’s success.
